Kapok vs. spelt husks:
What should you choose for your yoga cushion?
When choosing filling for your yoga or meditation cushion, both kapok and spelt husks are excellent choices, but they have different properties that can affect your experience and long-term durability.
Kapok
Kapok is a natural fiber extracted from the seeds of the kapok tree, which grows in tropical regions. It is a light, soft and silky fiber that has traditionally been used as a filling in meditation cushions in Asia. Kapok provides a softer cushion that is both firm and light, making it comfortable and easy to transport. However, over time, kapok can become more compact and sag slightly, which can reduce the height and firmness of the cushion. Kapok is also hypoallergenic, sustainable and breathable, ensuring a comfortable and natural experience.
Spelt husks
Spelt husks are shells from organic spelt that have been cleaned and heat-treated. They are very similar to buckwheat husks, but are slightly lighter and softer. Spelt husks provide a firm and malleable support that is ideal for yoga cushions that need to maintain their shape over time. A major advantage of pillows with spelt husks is that they are said to be more durable, as the husks do not sink as much over the years. The husks add a natural heaviness and stability, making them perfect for demanding yoga poses or prolonged meditation. At the same time, they have a slightly cooling effect, and their height can be adjusted by adding or removing filling.
What should you choose?
- Kapok: If you want a light, soft and silky smooth pillow that is hypoallergenic and traditionally used in meditation. Suitable for those who prioritize a lightweight solution and can accept that the filling may sag a little over time.
- Spelt husks: If you prefer a firm and stable pillow with high durability that does not lose its shape over time. Perfect for those who want adjustable support and a natural heaviness in the pillow.
